El 18 de Abril de 1888 tuvo lugar dentro de la embajada británica en Japón la lectura de un apasionante documento titulado: 'Jujutsu, el antiguo arte samurai de luchar sin armas'. El autor material fue el profesor Jigoro Kano, fundador del Judo Kodokan. El reverendo Thomas Lindsay asistió a Kano en la traducción y describió la escuela de Kano en las últimas páginas del texto. Este documento es de gran interés para todos los investigadores de la vida de Jigoro Kano y en especial a los analistas de la transición entre el antiguo bujutsu y el budo actual. Dada la fecha del documento (solo 5 o 6 años después de crear el Kodokan) podemos apreciar claramente el gran trabajo que realizó para estudiar a fondo las antiguas escuelas de Jujutsu, incluyendo en el texto algunas referencias a libros antiguos provenientes de china y Japón. Kano analiza entre otros asuntos el origen y significado del Jujutsu , nombra, describe y aporta datos sobre las escuelas más importantes en aquella época, resuelve el posible conflicto sobre la fecha y lugar del origen del Jujutsu y nos regala algunas historias y anécdotas de maestros celebres del koryu Jujutsu.
