La necessità di classificare le piante per poterle identificare ha portato allo sviluppo di diverse tecniche di studio delle piante. La morfologia di una pianta è la conseguenza delle caratteristiche della struttura interna del suo organismo. Lo sviluppo della microscopia ha reso possibile lo studio di questa struttura interna. Un organismo vegetale è costituito da un insieme di cellule organizzate in tessuti. Lo studio dei tessuti si chiama istologia. I biologi usano l’istologia per comprendere altri campi come la fisiologia e la biochimica. L’istologia vegetale è particolarmente importante in farmacognosia, dove i farmaci sono costituiti da frammenti di piante la cui morfologia esterna non può essere utilizzata per identificarli.
