Trata-se de um manual introdutório especialmente destinado a diferentes responsáveis pela proteção da criança, incluindo pais, irmãos, familiares, membros do comité comunitário de proteção da criança, professores, agentes da polícia, trabalhadores da saúde, agentes da segurança social, grupos da sociedade civil, etc. O manual está organizado em quatro (4) capítulos relacionados, sendo a criança o foco central. O primeiro capítulo apresenta o 'abuso de crianças' e fala basicamente das diferentes formas de violência contra as crianças, incluindo o abuso físico e sexual. O segundo capítulo apresenta os ’direitos da criança’ e tenta exprimi-los como uma componente integral dos direitos humanos. O terceiro capítulo apresenta os mecanismos de 'proteção da criança', incluindo a forma como podem ser criados ambientes protectores para as crianças. O quarto, que é o último capítulo, apresenta o ’aconselhamento de crianças necessitadas’ e inclui o aconselhamento individual, em grupo e institucional de crianças necessitadas. O manual não é um manual completo sobre abuso, direitos e proteção da criança, mas tenta dar ao leitor ou estudante uma apreciação introdutória do campo de estudo.
