A interface cérebro-máquina (BMI) é um canal de comunicação direta entre o cérebro e o computador. Fornece métodos de comunicação entre os sinais cerebrais que são detectados a partir do eletroencefalograma (EEG) do couro cabeludo e um dispositivo externo (braço robótico, cadeira de rodas...). As pessoas paralisadas ou com outras perturbações graves do movimento necessitam de métodos alternativos de comunicação e controlo. Estes métodos permitem-lhes controlar o ambiente sem necessidade de controlar a atividade muscular. Mostramos que os registos multi-electrodos do córtex motor primário podem ser utilizados para prever a atividade muscular do braço e da mão. Os sinais do eletroencefalograma (EEG) que provêm do couro cabeludo contêm sinais eléctricos que indicam o que se passa no cérebro humano ou o que gostariam de fazer. Os IMC actuais sofrem de muitos problemas, incluindo imprecisões, atrasos entre pensamentos, detecções de falsos positivos e restrições de tecnologias invasivas que necessitam de dinheiro e causam muitos perigos durante a cirurgia ao sujeito, pelo que este estudo ultrapassa todos os problemas anteriores.
