Designer interaktiver Systeme sind gefordert, die Navigation sowie die Vermittlung von Inhalten an der Benutzungsschnittstelle aufgaben- und benutzergerecht zu unterstützen. Die zweite Auflage der 'Interaktiven Systeme' wurde daher auf den Gebieten Multimedia-Systeme und Virtuelle Welten vertieft (Kapitel 5). Darüber hinaus wurden die Kapitel zur strukturierten Entwicklung von Benutzerschnittstellen (Kapitel 7) und zur Evaluierung interaktiver Systeme erweitert (Kapitel 10). Damit konnte den letzten Entwicklungen auf dem Gebiet des aufgabenorientierten Entwurfs von Benutzungsschnittstellen sowie der Software-ergonomischen Bewertung Rechnung getragen werden.
