Os medicamentos à base de plantas atingiram uma aceitação generalizada como agentes terapêuticos para diabéticos, artríticos, doenças hepáticas, remédios para a tosse e estimulantes da memória. Os doentes tomam frequentemente produtos à base de plantas em combinação com medicamentos terapêuticos e a maioria deles não informa os médicos sobre a utilização de suplementos à base de plantas. Quando as terapias à base de plantas medicinais são co-administradas com medicamentos sujeitos a receita médica, há um risco crescente de insucesso do tratamento clínico e de toxicidade adversa devido a interações medicamentosas com ervas. As ervas contêm múltiplos componentes, muitos dos quais com atividade biológica desconhecida. Estes constituintes podem potencialmente imitar, aumentar ou diminuir os efeitos dos medicamentos sujeitos a receita médica co-administrados, resultando em efeitos sinérgicos ou antagónicos através da interação simultânea no mesmo alvo terapêutico ou afectando a estabilidade metabólica destes medicamentos. Os medicamentos com janelas terapêuticas particularmente estreitas são propensos a interações adversas com produtos à base de plantas. O sistema enzimático CYP450 é o principal catalisador do metabolismo oxidativo. Consequentemente, as CYP mostraram estar envolvidas em numerosas interações entre medicamentos, nutrientes e ervas medicinais.
