O conflito deve ser evitado, pois indica um mau funcionamento dos grupos. O conflito era visto de forma negativa e era utilizado como sinónimo de termos como violência, destruição e irracionalidade para reforçar a sua conotação negativa. O conflito era visto como um resultado disfuncional resultante de uma comunicação deficiente, de uma falta de abertura e de confiança entre as pessoas. Os estilos de gestão de conflitos são o evitar, o acomodar, o competir, o comprometer e o colaborar. Os estilos de conflito são a assertividade (a medida em que se pretende que os objectivos sejam atingidos) e a cooperatividade (a medida em que se pretende ver satisfeitas as preocupações da outra parte). A escala de intenções de gestão de conflitos foi concebida para medir o comportamento de uma pessoa em situações de conflito. As 'situações de conflito' são aquelas em que as preocupações de duas pessoas parecem ser incompatíveis. Nessas situações, podemos descrever o comportamento de um indivíduo segundo duas dimensões básicas.
