Ce livre analyse les liens entre intelligence, handicap et réussite scolaire chez des enfants autistes ou présentant une déficience intellectuelle à Kinshasa. À partir d’une étude menée auprès de 105 élèves, il montre que les capacités cognitives ne suffisent pas, à elles seules, à expliquer les performances scolaires. L’intelligence y est envisagée comme un fonctionnement complexe associant raisonnement, attention, mémoire, perception, flexibilité cognitive et adaptation. Les résultats révèlent une grande diversité des profils : certains enfants disposant de meilleures capacités intellectuelles n’obtiennent pas nécessairement les meilleurs résultats scolaires, tandis que d’autres progressent grâce à un enseignement mieux adapté à leurs besoins. L’ouvrage met ainsi en évidence le rôle décisif de l’environnement pédagogique, des méthodes d’enseignement, de l’évaluation et de l’accompagnement. Il défend une école inclusive capable de reconnaître les limites sans réduire l’enfant à son diagnostic et, surtout, de créer les conditions permettant à chaque élève de développer pleinement son potentiel.
