Nel 1989, Stephen DeFelice, M.D., ha derivato il termine 'nutraceutico' da 'nutrizione' e 'farmaceutico'. Viene utilizzato come termine di marketing. La glucosammina, la condroitina e l’MSM sono integratori alimentari molto diffusi che vengono pubblicizzati come benefici per la salute delle articolazioni.Secondo la definizione data dal Congresso nel Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act (Legge sulla salute e l’educazione in materia di integratori alimentari), entrato in vigore nel 1994, un integratore alimentare è un prodotto (diverso dal tabacco) destinato a integrare la dieta; contiene uno o più ingredienti dietetici (vitamine, minerali, erbe, aminoacidi e altre sostanze); è destinato a essere assunto per via orale ed è etichettato sul pannello frontale come integratore alimentare.
