La modificazione genetica è il processo di manipolazione delle caratteristiche e delle funzioni dei geni originali di un organismo. Le tecniche di ingegneria genetica sono state applicate in numerosi campi, tra cui la ricerca, la biotecnologia e la medicina. Farmaci come l’insulina e l’ormone della crescita umano sono ora prodotti in batteri, topi sperimentali come l’oncomouse e il knockout mouse sono utilizzati a fini di ricerca e sono state commercializzate colture resistenti agli insetti. L’ingegneria genetica viene utilizzata anche per creare modelli animali di malattie umane. Sono stati inoltre allevati maiali geneticamente modificati con l’obiettivo di aumentare il successo dei trapianti di organi da maiale all’uomo. La terapia genica è l’ingegneria genetica degli esseri umani mediante la sostituzione di geni umani difettosi con copie funzionali. Se il gene viene inserito nel tessuto germinale, può essere trasmesso ai discendenti di quella persona. La terapia genica è stata utilizzata per trattare pazienti affetti da deficienze immunitarie e sono stati condotti studi su altre malattie genetiche.
