Nel 1929 Hans Berger compì un importante passo avanti per la neurologia e tutte le altre scienze che studiano il cervello e le sue funzioni. Questa scoperta divenne nota come elettroencefalogramma (EEG). Grazie alla scoperta di Hans Berger, anni dopo fu possibile sviluppare i metodi dell’interfaccia cervello-computer (BCI). La BCI è un’interfaccia uomo-macchina, il che significa che una persona può azionare una macchina senza utilizzare il sistema nervoso periferico. Poiché non è necessario muoversi per controllare una macchina tramite una BCI, si apre una nuova gamma di possibilità particolarmente interessante per le persone che, ad esempio, hanno subito un ictus e non sono più in grado di muoversi. Queste persone hanno così ottenuto una nuova possibilità di comunicazione e di movimento.
