A list of all federal pensioners on the rolls was compiled by the Secretary of the Interior in 1883 and published in five large volumes. The persons listed were predominantly Civil War veterans or their widows, but there were also numerous entries for the War of 1812. While these volumes will be found in many large libraries, and are still in print in a reprint edition, they are very difficult to use because the data was arranged geographically rather than alphabetically. The present work resolves this difficulty for Ohio researchers by providing an index, arranged alphabetically by surname, to all the persons listed with an Ohio residence. The index citations give the person’s full name, the Ohio county of residence, and the page number where the entry can be found in the original listing. Armed with this information, the researcher can then consult the original listing for other data including the post office address, basis for the pension, monthly rate, and the certificate number for persons of interest. Directions on how to order copies of the original pension files from the National Archives are given in the introduction.
