Com quase 7,7% da população indiana sendo geriátrica, a polifarmácia e a prescrição inadequada representam um desafio para enfrentar o uso errático de medicamentos pelos idosos, no tratamento de uma ou muitas condições subjacentes. A prescrição de múltiplos medicamentos pode levar ao aumento de RAMs durante o período de tratamento. Para evitar o aumento de tais condições potenciais, ferramentas de triagem de prescrição como START (Ferramenta de triagem para alertar o tratamento correto) e STOPP (Ferramenta de triagem de prescrição para idosos) são usadas para alertar os PIMs e otimizar a terapia. O objetivo do estudo foi compreender a prevalência da polifarmácia e da prescrição e uso de medicamentos potencialmente inadequados na população geriátrica. Usando as ferramentas de triagem START/STOPP. O presente estudo observacional prospectivo foi realizado utilizando fichas de casos de 166 pacientes com mais de 65 anos (51,8% homens) (48,1% mulheres). Os 916 medicamentos em todos os casos foram selecionados para medicamentos potencialmente inapropriados usando a ferramenta de triagem START/STOPP.
