A imunohematologia é uma parte da hematologia que estuda as reacções imunitárias entre os antigénios presentes nos eritrócitos (glóbulos vermelhos) e os anticorpos presentes no plasma sanguíneo. É a área responsável pela determinação dos grupos sanguíneos e pelo estudo dos anticorpos contra os eritrócitos, estudos que visam estudar a presença de anticorpos anti-eritrocitários (anticorpos que se ligam aos glóbulos vermelhos) e o seu significado patológico. Trata-se de um tipo especial de análise de sangue. O nosso sistema imunitário pode criar naturalmente anticorpos contra substâncias que não considera próprias, como mecanismo de defesa . Por vezes, essas substâncias podem estar presentes em glóbulos vermelhos que são estranhos ao nosso organismo.
