Przedstawia ona zarys debat Lakatos-Popper-Kuhn, które posłużyły jako punkt wyjścia dla metodologii lakatosowskiej, opartej na gruntownej przebudowie kryterium popperowskiego, mającej na celu - jak się uważa - uchronienie jej przed krytyką Kuhna. Wynika z tego również potrzeba stworzenia struktury historyczno-normatywnej, która zagwarantuje historyczną rekonstrukcję racjonalności naukowej.
