Uma importante iniciativa de melhoria, com impactos práticos diretos, tem sido a adoção do Lean Construction (LC). A técnica de LC mais conhecida é o Last Planner System (LPS), que tem sido demonstrado como uma ferramenta muito útil para a gestão do processo de construção e para a monitorização contínua da eficiência do planeamento. Atualmente, no Norte do Iraque, o aumento do crescimento económico, bem como a urbanização nas cidades em desenvolvimento, conduziram a actividades de construção extensivas que geram grandes quantidades de resíduos. Os resíduos nos projectos de construção resultaram em enormes contratempos financeiros para os construtores e empreiteiros. Para além disso, podem também causar efeitos significativos na estética, na saúde e no ambiente em geral.
