Questo libro comprende vari aspetti delle indagini sulle frane nelle regioni collinari e pone l’accento sulle osservazioni in loco e sulla cinematica per comprendere il meccanismo di rottura dei pendii. Un caso di studio è stato intrapreso lungo l’autostrada nazionale tra Jammu e Udhampur nello Stato di Jammu e Kashmir (India), nell’Himalaya nord-occidentale. Sono state raccolte e analizzate le osservazioni sul campo e i dati relativi agli aspetti dei pendii, alle precipitazioni e ai giunti. Lo studio rivela che i pendii collinari costituiti da litologie fragili e sensibili all’acqua (alternanze di arenaria e fango) diventano più vulnerabili se non si adottano tempestivamente misure preventive durante i processi di allargamento delle strade. Il taglio dei pendii per l’allargamento delle strade modifica il paesaggio, con l’aumento dell’angolo di inclinazione dei pendii e il taglio della punta, ed espone le nuove superfici all’erosione dovuta al ruscellamento superficiale durante le piogge incessanti, con la conseguente formazione di ruscelli e canaloni. In caso di precipitazioni prolungate e continue, questi rills e gullies aggravano ulteriormente il meccanismo di rottura dei pendii e danno luogo a frane di grandi dimensioni. Inoltre, la perdita dell’angolo di riposo provoca il cedimento del pendio per gravità.
