Compreender os impactos climáticos é importante para compreendermos a relação entre o clima e a sociedade. Os fenómenos meteorológicos podem ter impactos ambientais, económicos e sociais. A seca é o risco natural que mais afeta as pessoas. É também o mais complexo e menos compreendido. Não existe uma definição universalmente aceite para seca, o que dificulta a sua análise. A duração das secas também é difícil de determinar, pois não há um início e um fim claramente definidos. Além disso, a seca varia tanto geograficamente quanto temporalmente, dificultando o monitoramento uniforme. Como a seca é difícil de monitorar e avaliar, seus impactos são frequentemente mal documentados. O objetivo desta pesquisa foi quantificar (em dólares) os impactos da seca na agricultura de Kentucky. A seca é registrada historicamente em Kentucky desde o final do século XIX. De acordo com o Kentucky Climate Center, os anos de seca mais significativos ocorreram em 1930-31, 1940-42 e 1952-55. As análises desses anos estão incluídas, bem como os anos de seca significativos mais recentes em 1987-88, 1999-2000 e 2007.
