L’assenza di considerazioni ambientali nella contabilità nazionale può generare segnali economici fuorvianti sulla crescita e sullo sviluppo economico. Se da un lato il PIL può aumentare grazie alla rapida liquidazione del capitale naturale, dall’altro questa strategia può mettere a rischio la stabilità economica a lungo termine. Nel 1993, le Nazioni Unite hanno introdotto il Sistema dei conti economico-ambientali (SEEA) per incoraggiare la compilazione di conti ambientali nazionali. Questi conti forniscono una misurazione delle scorte e delle variazioni delle scorte del capitale naturale di un Paese e del modo in cui le variazioni di questi beni influiscono sulla ricchezza nazionale. Queste conoscenze possono costituire una base per l’elaborazione di politiche informate volte a perseguire una prosperità economica sostenibile. Ad oggi, tuttavia, solo 25 Paesi hanno implementato in parte il quadro SEEA per la contabilità ambientale e nessun Paese ha adottato tutte le componenti incluse nel SEEA. Questo studio cerca di spiegarne i motivi. Il libro inizia con un’esplorazione della storia dell’economia 'verde' e dei fattori politici che giocano un ruolo nel greening. Tre casi di studio mostrano una serie di implementazioni della SEEA che aiutano a capire come utilizzare la SEEA come strumento per una maggiore sostenibilità nazionale.
