'Il Piacere' è la storia di Andrea Sperelli, un ricco e aristocratico cultore dell’arte in tutte le sue sfaccettature, incline ai piaceri della vita quotidiana. Giunto a Roma nell’ottobre 1884, Andrea inizia a frequentare i luoghi e le feste più elitarie della capitale. È in una di queste che conosce Elena Muti, una giovane contessa rimasta vedova con la quale intraprende ben presto una focosa relazione. Quando però, nel marzo 1885, la donna annuncia ad Andrea di voler troncare la storia e di aver preso la decisione di andarsene da Roma, questi inizia una vita volta alla dissoluzione e alla depravazione. Dopo essere passato di donna in donna, fa la conoscenza di Maria Ferres, donna casta e religiosa di cui si invaghisce e che intende ad ogni costo conquistare.
