È noto che il gioco consente al bambino ricoverato di passare da una situazione passiva di malato a una attiva, il che può essere inteso come un fattore di protezione, potenziatore dello sviluppo di fronte ai rischi sociali del contesto ospedaliero. Per comprendere le molteplici interazioni, affrontiamo lo sviluppo umano basato sulla teoria ecologica e bioecologica di Urie Bronfenbrenner. Il bambino ricoverato ha bisogno di più che medicine, cibo, cure mediche e ambienti colorati: il gioco è fondamentale. Inoltre, sono importanti le interrelazioni 'buone' e significative, quelle che potenziano lo sviluppo. Trasformare l’ambiente ospedaliero in uno spazio di gioco permanente può potenziare l’apprendimento e lo sviluppo e favorire il miglioramento della qualità della vita dei pazienti.
