'Di sicuro c’è solo che è morto'. Così titolava un celebre pezzo di un inviato dell’Europeo, Tommaso Besozzi, sulla morte di Salvatore Giuliano, il bandito siciliano le cui gesta hanno avuto il destino di intrecciarsi in modo profondo con gli avvenimenti socio-politici del nostro secondo dopoguerra: dal separatismo siciliano alla riemersione del terrorismo mafioso, che aveva avuto una battuta d’arresto durante il ventennio fascista. In una prospettiva interdisciplinare, l’intento di questo volume è quello di vedere come il cinema si può rapportare ad un importante evento storico. Si è deciso quindi di analizzare in particolare i tre film più noti e discussi sulla figura del bandito: Salvatore Giuliano di Francesco Rosi, Segreti di Stato di Paolo Benvenuti e Il siciliano di Michael Cimino. Essi ci sono sembrati infatti rivelatori di tre differenti ed emblematiche modalità cinematografiche e narrative con cui il cinema può scegliere di affrontare un determinato evento storico.
