Im 20. Jahrhundert hat sich Freizeit zu einem entscheidenden Faktor im Leben der Menschen entwickelt. Ein höherer materieller Lebensstandard, bessere Gesundheit, ein höheres Bildungsniveau, ein sinkender Anteil des Lebens, der der Arbeit gewidmet wird, und größere persönliche Freiheit haben für viele Menschen ein enorm gestiegenes Freizeitpotenzial geschaffen. Mit der Entwicklung der Informations- und Kommunikationstechnologie (IKT) haben die Wechselwirkungen zwischen IKT und Sozialkapital in Organisationen und der Gesellschaft insgesamt sowohl die Aufmerksamkeit von Forschern als auch von politischen Entscheidungsträgern auf sich gezogen. Die Forschung auf diesem Gebiet steht jedoch noch am Anfang. Es gibt nur unzureichende Kenntnisse über die Beziehung zwischen IKT und Sozialkapital, d. h. darüber, wie sich IKT auf das Sozialkapital auswirkt.
