Die Anwendung der Ultrahochfrequenz-Radiofrequenzidentifikation (RFID) hat seit der Ratifizierung des EPC Class 1 Gen 2 (EPC C1G2, auch bekannt als ISO 18000-6C) Protokolls an Dynamik gewonnen. Die begrenzte Verfügbarkeit von Schottky-Barrier-Dioden (SBD) hat die Suche nach alternativen Schaltungslösungen zur Herstellung von UHF-RFID-Chips mit vergleichbarer Leistung unter Verwendung typischer CMOS-Prozesse vorangetrieben. Das analoge Frontend von UHF-RFID besteht aus vier Bausteinen: UHF-HF-zu-DC-Gleichrichter, Spannungsreferenz und -regler, Modulator und Demodulator. In diesem Buch wurde der dynamische Schwellenwert-MOSFET (DTMOST) als vielversprechendes Bauelement für Anwendungen mit extrem niedrigem Stromverbrauch identifiziert und es wurden Schaltungstopologien und Entwurfsmethoden unter Verwendung von DTMOST für das UHF-RFID-AFE untersucht. Alle Schaltungsentwürfe und Analysen basieren auf einer CMOS-Technologie mit 0,18 µm Einzelpolysilizium, sechs Metallschichten (1P6M) und dreifacher Wannenstruktur. Die Leistungssteigerung, der Stromverbrauch, der Flächenbedarf und die Designaspekte der DTMOST-Techniken wurden mit denen herkömmlicher Zellen verglichen und gegenübergestellt.
