In questo lavoro viene discussa la necessità di terapie più sicure contro le infezioni gastrointestinali con effetti nocivi ridotti sul microbiota intestinale positivo, soprattutto in relazione alla crescente resistenza dei patogeni agli antibiotici. Poiché molti fitochimici possiedono una forte attività antimicrobica specifica, questo lavoro si concentra sui prodotti di origine vegetale ad azione selettiva nel contesto della loro attività inibitoria nei confronti dei patogeni intestinali rispetto al loro impatto ridotto sul microbiota intestinale benefico dell’uomo. A seguito della parte sperimentale, è stato selezionato un alcaloide naturale, l’8-idrossichinolina (8HQ), come il fitocomposto con la selettività più pronunciata tra i 26 prodotti di origine vegetale testati. La sua attività è stata esaminata anche con un metodo che combina l’ibridazione fluorescente in situ e la citometria a flusso. Inoltre, la selettività dell’8HQ è stata utilizzata in pratica per lo sviluppo di un terreno selettivo migliorato per l’isolamento dei bifidobatteri dalle feci. In conclusione, si suggerisce di approfondire la ricerca sui fitocomposti come agenti antibatterici più sicuri.
