Lo scopo principale di questo studio è stato quello di indagare i fattori che causano l’abbandono scolastico in una scuola secondaria urbana selezionata situata nella provincia metropolitana di Bulawayo. Lo studio si è ispirato ai paradigmi post-positivista e costruttivista, utilizzando una combinazione di dati quantitativi e qualitativi in un approccio di tipo misto. I dati sono stati raccolti utilizzando questionari a risposta chiusa, analisi dei documenti e protocolli di intervista semi-strutturati. Le fonti di dati, la metodologia e le teorie sono state triangolate per autenticare i dati raccolti. I rispondenti e gli intervistati/informatori chiave sono stati campionati rispettivamente in modo sistematico e mirato. I temi principali si sono concentrati sul concetto di abbandono scolastico, sulle sue cause e sui suoi rimedi. Lo studio, quindi, ha portato alla luce che i partecipanti erano consapevoli del concetto, dei fattori che lo causano a livello di studente/famiglia, comunità e scuola. Quest’ultimo, anche se minimo, minacciava l’efficienza interna del sistema educativo dello Zimbabwe. È stato proposto un programma di studi inclusivo, olistico e pertinente, volto a soddisfare le esigenze diversificate degli studenti.
