L’alcol è una droga socialmente accettabile e troppi indigeni muoiono a causa di questa attività socialmente accettabile. In alcuni luoghi, gli indigeni del Nord America muoiono di alcolismo a un tasso 10 volte superiore alla media nazionale. Ho visto indigeni morire di alcolismo negli Stati Uniti e in Canada. È una cosa che mi spezza il cuore. Avendo sofferto io stesso di alcolismo e razzismo, il suicidio diventa una possibilità reale. Alcolisti Anonimi (AA) funziona meglio quando si tocca il fondo, e così ho toccato il fondo prima di poter smettere di bere. Nessuno poteva dirmi cosa fare, ho dovuto imparare a mie spese. Gli alcolisti prendevano in giro la parola 'sobrietà' e la commentavano in modo negativo. Quando sei ubriaco, è come morire. Ad un certo punto della mia vita ho dovuto decidere se volevo vivere o morire. Ho scelto la vita. Dopo aver smesso di bere, ho scoperto di voler vivere di nuovo. Essere sobri significa essere sani di mente. Le persone di Alcolisti Anonimi mi hanno aiutato molto. AA e la cultura nativa possono essere simili, ma non sono la stessa cosa. Anche se AA è un programma spirituale, ho sviluppato un programma in 12 fasi per gli indiani d’America perché abbiamo bisogno di trovare prima noi stessi.
