In dieser Studie werden die Wasserqualität und die Eigenschaften der Kernsedimente in einem Feuchtgebiet im Binnenland (Vellayani-See) und einem Feuchtgebiet an der Küste (Poovar-Mündung) eingehend untersucht. Die Studie ermöglicht eine unabhängige Analyse jeder Region (d.h. Süßwasser, Ästuar und Meer) des Ökosystems, um zu differenzieren, wie jeder Teil eine wichtige Rolle in der Gesamtfunktion des Systems spielt. Die Studie über Feuchtgebiete ergab, dass die Wasserqualität sowohl des Vellayani-Sees als auch der Poovar-Mündung verschmutzt und verschlechtert ist. Um die Verschmutzung der Feuchtgebiete zu verringern, müssen die Menschen die Abfallentsorgung in den Feuchtgebieten vermeiden, geeignete Überwachungsprogramme zur Ermittlung direkter und indirekter Verschmutzungsquellen einleiten und die einheimische Bevölkerung über die Bedeutung der Feuchtgebiete aufklären.
