Hydrogel, das auch als superabsorbierendes Polymer bekannt ist, ist eine Art von Polymer, dessen Struktur dreidimensional ist und das in der Lage ist, zu quellen und große Mengen an Wasser zu absorbieren. Die Wasseraufnahme hängt von vielen Faktoren ab, z. B. von der Art des Polymers, der Temperatur, dem Druck und anderen Faktoren wie der Vernetzungsdichte. Es gibt viele Arten von Hydrogelen auf der Welt. Einer dieser Typen ist Poly(vinylalkohol), der mit Aldehyd wie Glutaraldehyd vernetzt ist. Ein weiteres Beispiel ist das mit Methylen-Bis-Acrylamid vernetzte Poly(2-Acrylamid-2-Methyl-1-Propansulfonsäure) Hydrogel (PAMPS).
