Die Kartierung von Überschwemmungsgebieten ist ein wichtiges Instrument für die kommunale und städtische Wachstumsplanung, Notfallpläne, Hochwasserversicherungsraten und ökologische Studien. Die Kartierung von Überschwemmungsgebieten ist ein entscheidender Bestandteil bei Maßnahmen zur Reduzierung des Hochwasserrisikos. Mit dem begleitenden GIS-Dienstprogramm, insbesondere Arc-GIS und HEC-GeoRAS, wird im Rahmen der vorliegenden Arbeit eine Studie zur Kartierung von Überschwemmungsgebieten mit HEC-RAS durchgeführt und eine Fallstudie über die Stadt Gorakhpur und ihre Umgebung vorgestellt. Die Stadt Gorakhpur und ihre stadtnahen Gebiete sind für ihre häufigen Überschwemmungen berüchtigt. Sie liegt in der Flussaue des unteren Rapti-Flussbeckens und gehört zu den flachen mittleren Gangesebenen in Indien. In der Studie wurden ein vektorbasiertes GIS und ein digitales Geländemodell verwendet, um die Grenzen der Wasserscheiden abzugrenzen und Gebiete mit möglicher Überschwemmung während eines Hochwasserereignisses in und um die Stadt Gorakhpur vorherzusagen.
