Die tertiäre Bildung, d.h. die Hochschulbildung, wie sie weltweit bekannt ist, war im königlichen Sikkim bis zum späten 20. Als Indien seine Unabhängigkeit erlangte, wurde es auch zum Beschützer des königlichen Sikkim. Im Jahr 1975 wurde das königliche Sikkim jedoch als 22. Staat an Indien angegliedert. Zu diesem Zeitpunkt gab es im Bundesstaat Sikkim außer zwei religiösen Einrichtungen und einer Abendschule noch keine einzige Hochschuleinrichtung. Die Bürger von Sikkim haben erst seit 1977 Zugang zur Hochschulbildung. Die erste Hochschuleinrichtung entstand auf private Initiative hin, und danach begann in Sikkim eine Revolution in der Hochschulbildung. Dieses Buch gibt einen kurzen Einblick in die Geschichte des Bildungswesens in Sikkim und beschreibt in übersichtlicher Weise die Entstehung und Entwicklung der Hochschuleinrichtungen im Bundesstaat Sikkim mit besonderem Augenmerk auf deren gegenwärtigen Status. Auch die Perspektiven der Hochschulbildung für Sikkim im 21. Jahrhundert werden analysiert.
