Książka ta dotyczy badania historii życia i perspektyw na przyszłość dorosłych uczniów po powrocie do szkoły. Badanie zostało przeprowadzone w szkole miejskiej w mieście Esteio w stanie Rio Grande do Sul w Brazylii. Badana grupa należała do projektu Ação Integrada Adultos, w ramach programu edukacji młodzieży i dorosłych. W procesie tym zastosowano następującą metodologię: mapowanie danych dotyczących grupy; analiza dokumentów (plan polityki pedagogicznej szkoły i regulamin programu Ação Integrada Adultos); badanie jakościowe oparte na obserwacjach empirycznych grupy uczniów (sala lekcyjna, spotkania towarzyskie co kwartał i uroczystość ukończenia szkoły); częściowo ustrukturyzowane wywiady z próbą uczniów i nauczycielką prowadzącą zajęcia; oraz analiza danych według kategorii. Wśród teoretyków, którzy wsparli analizę, na uwagę zasługują odniesienia do Paulo Freire, Álvaro Vieira Pinto i Miguel Arroyo. Cele badania były następujące: kontekstualizacja rzeczywistości i historii życia badanych osób; analiza stopnia, w jakim uczniowie planują przyszłość po powrocie do szkoły; obserwacja i analiza znaczenia, jakie szkoła ma dla uczniów.
