Este volumen de la Historia de la Europa urbana, dirigida por Jean-Luc Pinol, estudia las ciudades extraeuropeas desde la perspectiva de sus relaciones con los modelos del Viejo Continente. Se trata de un análisis de las modalidades en las que se expresa la influencia europea en la fundación y el desarrollo urbanos. Efectivamente se produjeron fenómenos complejos de transmisión, ya fuese directamente, a través de las colonizaciones, o indirectamente, debido a la hegemonía cultural o técnica de Europa. Desde la Época Moderna y la primera ola de colonización de los siglos xv-xvi, hasta la era del predominio económico y cultural europeo de los siglos xix-xx, esta obra repasa los escenarios urbanos de los imperios español y portugués, de la América francesa, británica y holandesa, y las transformaciones de las ciudades asiáticas y africanas durante la Época Contemporánea.
