Bajo la dirección de Jean-Luc Pinol, este volumen ofrece una amplia síntesis de la urbanización europea durante los siglos XVI-XVIII, ya que marcaron unas tendencias decisivas en la historia de las ciudades que deben buscarse sobre todo en la recomposición de los sistemas locales de poderes. El centralismo absolutista transformó profundamente las formas de gobierno urbanas y reforzó el papel político y económico de las ciudades capitales. El crecimiento demográfico y el desarrollo de la producción y del comercio tendían a insertar cada vez con más fuerza a las ciudades en unas redes que superaban los antiguos marcos de las jerarquías administrativas, religiosas o judiciales. Esta interdependencia suscitaba nuevas formas de vulnerabilidad ante los cambios de la coyuntura, y propició reajustes que esbozaban lo que sería la geografía urbana de la era industrial.
