Este primer volumen de la ’Historia de la Europa urbana’ describe el origen de las ciudades europeas, desde las civilizaciones determinadas por el hecho urbano como son los mundos griego y romano hasta el nacimiento de la ciudad cristiana durante los cambios que marcan el final del imperio, analizando la formación de la ciudad clásica y la edad de oro de la ciudad antigua. La ciudad no constituye una categoría inmutable, sino que se transforma constantemente. Es un palimpsesto de experiencias históricas que redefinen las interrelaciones que se tejen entre formas urbanas y prácticas sociales. Estas experiencias se analizan en su diversidad, desde el nacimiento de las ciudades en Grecia o en la Italia arcaica hasta la reorganización de lo urbano en época cristiana, en los últimos momentos del imperio romano y la formación de los nuevos reinos germánicos.
