Environmental pollution, particularly from heavy metals due to industrial progress, is a global concern, especially in developing regions where coastal pollution affects livelihoods. The presence of chemical pollutants in dietary products raises alarms for policymakers. Marine fish are crucial for nutrition, providing essential proteins and omega-3 fatty acids, making it vital to assess seafood quality for both consumption and export. A study analyzed four commonly consumed fish species from the Chettuva landing center in Thrissur, finding that Euthynnus affinis had higher nutrient values compared to the others. Sensory evaluations indicated that all fish were similarly accepted based on various attributes. However, microbial contamination was significantly higher in Nemipterus japonicus, which also showed elevated levels of essential and non-essential heavy metals. Health risk assessments revealed that children are more vulnerable to heavy metal accumulation than adults. The study concluded that fish from this region, particularly Nemipterus japonicus, pose health risks due to contamination exceeding safety limits, necessitating urgent environmental protection measures.
