'I remember slowly drifting out of the pain into a slow-motion image of a broken-down bridge I was trying to cross holding onto the old rope railings. Above me was a brand-new bridge with beams of gold.' He Called Me Ahab is the harrowing yet finally uplifting story of Patricia Jolls' life. As a child, she endured the cruelty of an elder brother and the antics of two squabbling, drunken parents, whose irresponsibility forced her to grow up too fast. Still far too young, she married a man she had no feelings for, whose abusive behaviour left her needing psychiatric help. After a short second long relationship, marked by tragedy, she became addicted to both drugs and alcohol - a pattern that has affected the lives of all her children. At perhaps her lowest ebb, she had an unusual dream, a dream which convinced her that God was speaking directly to her. Armed with a renewed and growing understanding of her long-neglected faith, she was finally able to turn her life around. Now in her 70s, Patricia Jolls can look back on her troubled life with calm and objectivity. She tells her story with an admirable directness but with an unerring eye for telling detail.
