Mason Crum’s study of the Gullah people of the Carolina Sea islands is at once a product of its time and a more modern and sensitive treatment of enslaved culture. A descendant of slaveowners, and having grown up around formerly enslaved people, Crum was uniquely positioned to offer a still-useful portrayal of these people.
