Guillermo Tell es una de las obras más populares de Schiller y del romanticismo. Su tema es la lucha por la libertad y se enmarca en el año antes de la coronación de Napoleón como emperador. Baumgarte, perseguido injustamente, es salvado por Tell; Stauffacher temeroso del despotismo del gobernador ínsita al levantamiento; el gobernador levanta un castillo “El Altdorf” y cuelga un sombrero a la vista de todos para que lo honren como si fuera un soberano. El padre de Melchtal, ha sido cegado por orden superior y decide alzarse contra la autoridad: los representantes de los cantones suizos juran un pacto de solidaridad para luchar contra Austria y su procurador Gessler.
