Die Studie entstand in Kooperation aus der Auseinandersetzung mit den Themenbereichen der klassischen Volkskunde, der Interkulturellen Kompetenz und der politischen Bildung. Sie waren für den Autor der Einstieg in kulturvergleichende Theorien, Konzepte, Arbeitsbereiche und Handlungsfelder.Damit ist eine Perspektive der eigenen Gesellschaft verbunden. Zunehmend sind kulturwissenschaftliche Zugänge von Interesse. Ausgehend von einem Überblick über das Fach als wissenschaftliche Disziplin, Kulturkonzepte und Methoden wird auf die Fachgeschichte, Teildisziplinen und neue Ansätze eingegangen. Zu beachten sind der interdisziplinäre Ansatz und die Verflechtungen des Fachgebietes sowie der Fachgebiete. Die Auseinandersetzung mit der Fachliteratur vervollständigt die Überlegungen.
