Jan Wessel analysiert die Subtraktion zunächst aus theoretischer Perspektive. Dabei arbeitet er die Rest- und die Unterschiedsvorstellung als Grundvorstellungen der Subtraktion heraus. Darauf aufbauend geht er in einem empirischen Teil der Frage nach, inwiefern Schülerinnen und Schüler des ersten Schuljahres Unterschiedsvorstellungen und darauf aufbauende Vorgehensweisen zur Lösung von Subtraktionsproblemen nutzen. Auf der Grundlage einer Interviewstudie kann er zeigen, dass der Gebrauch der Grundvorstellungen in einem Spektrum zwischen operationaler und relationaler Realisierung stattfindet und die Kinder zur Lösung von Subtraktionsproblemen sowohl explizite als auch implizite Grundvorstellungswechsel vollziehen.
