Zur Interpretativen Unterrichtsforschung sind bereits einige Zusammenfassungen und Überblicke erschienen. Die vorliegende Publikation zeichnet sich neben diesen durch ihren Theorie und Methodologie verschränkenden Ansatz aus: Zunächst wird ein theoretischer Rahmen zur Einordnung von Forschungen unter dem interpretativen Ansatz entwickelt. Dabei ist die Schwerpunktsetzung explizit soziologisch. Mit Hilfe dieses theoretischen Rahmens werden beispielhaft mehrere Projekte aus dieser Forschungsrichtung im Hinblick auf ihre gewonnenen theoretischen Erkenntnisse analysiert. An der Darstellung und Reflexion eigener Forschungsarbeiten werden schließlich auch methodische und praktische Fragen der Projektdurchführung erörtert.
