Mit der Geoökologie hat sich in den letzten Jahren eine interdisziplinäre Naturwissenschaft entwickelt, welche die Strukturen, die Funktionsweise und die Wirkungszusammenhänge in unserer Umwelt aufklärt. Daraus resultiert die Notwendigkeit einer breiten naturwissenschaftlichen Fachkenntnis. Bislang fehlt jedoch ein zusammenfassendes Lehrbuch, in dem die inhaltliche Vielfalt des Fachgebiets ganzheitlich betrachtet und formalisiert beschrieben wird. Die unterschiedlichen Quellen und Bestandteile des Faches sowie die Komplexität des Gegenstandes (Erscheinungen und Prozesse in unserer Umwelt) bedürfen einer einheitlichen Terminologie, Systematisierung und Ordnung. Dies kann nur eine theoretische Basis leisten, welche durch dieses Lehrbuch geschaffen werden soll.
