Global Warming is one of the complex problems mankind is facing today which is evident from observations of increase in global average air and ocean temperatures, widespread melting of snow and ice, and rising global average sea level. Increase in temperature due to climate change has been widespread over the globe. It has resulted in decline in mountain glaciers and snow cover in both hemispheres and this is projected to accelerate throughout 21st century. This will result into reduced water availability, hydro-power potential and will further affect the physical, chemical and biological properties of fresh water lakes and rivers. Climate change has the potential to cause immense biodiversity loss, affecting both individual species and their ecosystems that support economic growth and human well being. India has adopted the National Environmental Policy which provides several measures and policy initiatives to create awareness about climate change and is committed to the path of sustainable development.
