Le occasioni mancate di vaccinazione (OMV) sono definite come un momento in cui un bambino idoneo alla vaccinazione e privo di valide controindicazioni si reca in una struttura sanitaria e NON riceve tutti i vaccini raccomandati. (OMS 1991) Le occasioni mancate di vaccinazione sono un fattore che può spiegare le basse coperture vaccinali osservate. Nella Repubblica Democratica del Congo, il Programma Esteso di Vaccinazione (PEV) ha come obiettivo quello di vaccinare ogni bambino ovunque si trovi, al fine di ridurre l’incidenza delle malattie target prevenibili tramite vaccinazione. Questo obiettivo può essere raggiunto solo con una copertura vaccinale di almeno l’80% della popolazione target, ben superiore a quella attualmente riportata nelle zone sanitarie della Repubblica Democratica del Congo.
