È opinione diffusa che la crescita di un’economia dipenda in modo critico dagli investimenti sia esteri che interni. La necessità di investimenti diretti esteri deriva dalla natura sottosviluppata dell’economia nigeriana, che ostacola essenzialmente il ritmo del suo sviluppo economico. In questo contesto, lo studio si è concentrato sull’analisi dell’impatto degli investimenti diretti esteri sull’economia nigeriana. Lo studio ha esaminato la relazione tra gli investimenti diretti esteri e la crescita della Nigeria dal 1980 al 2015. Per raggiungere l’obiettivo dello studio è stata utilizzata la tecnica di cointegrazione di Johansen. Il risultato ha rivelato che tutti i regressori, gli investimenti diretti esteri, il tasso di interesse, la spesa pubblica e l’inflazione, nonché il regressore, il prodotto interno lordo, che rappresenta la crescita economica, hanno una relazione positiva di lungo periodo nel periodo in esame. L’implicazione dei risultati è che il governo dovrebbe creare un ambiente favorevole, come la stabilità macroeconomica (stabilità dei prezzi relativi e del tasso di cambio), la stabilità politica e lo sviluppo infrastrutturale, per attirare più IDE in Nigeria.
