Die Vereinten Nationen definieren Gewalt gegen Frauen als jede geschlechtsspezifische Gewalttat, die zu körperlichem, seelischem oder sexuellem Schaden führt oder führen kann, einschließlich Drohungen, Nötigung oder Freiheitsberaubung, unabhängig davon, ob sie im öffentlichen oder privaten Bereich stattfindet. Geschlechtsspezifische Gewalt, einschließlich Menschenhandel zum Zweck der sexuellen Ausbeutung, verletzt die Rechte von Frauen und Mädchen, behindert die Entwicklung und ist ein Affront gegen die Menschlichkeit.Menschenhandel wird ausdrücklich im Zusammenhang mit der Beseitigung aller Formen von Gewalt gegen Frauen und Mädchen in allen Bereichen erwähnt, und obwohl die Richtlinie 2011/36/EU und andere europäische Instrumente den Sexhandel nicht als Verbrechen der geschlechtsspezifischen Gewalt einstufen, erkennen sie den Zusammenhang zwischen den beiden Phänomenen und die Bedeutung eines geschlechtsspezifischen Ansatzes an.
