Biomedizinische Abfälle (BMA) stellen ein Problem für die Gesundheit und die Umwelt dar. Daher wurde eine Studie durchgeführt, um ein System zur Entsorgung biomedizinischer Abfälle zu entwickeln, dessen Umsetzung die öffentliche Gesundheit verbessern und gleichzeitig ökologischen, technischen und soziokulturellen Belangen Rechnung tragen soll. Es handelt sich um eine deskriptive Querschnittsstudie, die vom 16. bis 31. Januar 2016 durchgeführt wurde. Biomedizinische Abfälle werden, ebenso wie Hausmüll oder andere Abfälle, in allen Ländern in ständig wachsendem Umfang produziert, und ihre Gefahren nehmen proportional zur produzierten Menge zu. Eine angemessene Bewirtschaftung dieser Art von Abfällen im Hinblick auf eine Entsorgung, die die Risiken für Gesundheit und Umwelt minimiert, ist mit hohen Kosten verbunden, was die Probleme in Entwicklungsländern noch verschärft. Der Mangel an Mitteln darf jedoch nicht als Entschuldigung für Untätigkeit dienen, und die Gesundheitssituation im Zusammenhang mit biomedizinischen Abfällen könnte sich durch ein stärkeres Bewusstsein der lokalen Akteure und eine Verbesserung ihrer Bewirtschaftung positiv entwickeln.
