Os métodos e ferramentas de gestão do conhecimento utilizados num laboratório de informática de uma universidade pública para produzir simplesmente software ou software especializado são examinados, ou seja, se o software produzido está especificamente orientado para uma actividade profissional específica, como a medicina, a indústria automóvel ou aeronáutica, ou alguma outra actividade. E se não, sugere-se que se preste atenção a três métodos bem conhecidos como o método SECI de Nonaka e Takeuchi, o método KPMG e o método Arthur Andersen, que se encaixam melhor num ambiente académico superior. São também mencionadas e sugeridas três ferramentas que ajudariam a gerir muito melhor a informação e os conhecimentos gerados, tais como: uma base de dados documental, uma história dos resultados e um directório de peritos. Tudo isto complementado com uma infra-estrutura TIC moderna, apropriada e sustentável no tempo, mais o compromisso pedagógico de explorar estes métodos e ferramentas e definir um objectivo de desenvolvimento de software especializado para qualquer campo, faria de uma universidade uma referência no desenvolvimento de software especializado.
