El saber ambiental se ha constituido en uno de los desafíos cognoscitivos y epistemológicos más acuciantes dada su creciente incidencia en la problemática social, económica, política y jurídica.Los artículos que constituyen este volumen, aun proviniendo de autores de diferente origen disciplinar, se centran todos en la gestión metropolitana y de los servicios públicos desde una perspectiva ambiental, profundizando en ella como conocimiento científico, en las teorías del desarrollo sustentable y en las nuevas metodologías. Tomando distintos ejemplos, se abordan tres aspectos básicos: los fenómenos ambientales como hechos de la realidad, los problemas ambientales como articulación de elementos sociales y naturales, y los conceptos ambientales que delimitan el campo disciplinar como una construcción conceptual que, asentada en las ciencias, trasciende la arena científica y se instala en la agenda política internacional.La diversidad de enfoques demuestra que no hay un modelo único de planificación y gestión. Diferentes disciplinas convergen en diálogos interdisciplinares para aportar nuevas interpretaciones de los fenómenos ambientales, prestando especial interés a las transformaciones de la realidad nacional, inserta en un escenario globalizado.
